The Chief Executive of the Sydney Not For Profit group HammondCare, Dr Stephen Judd, has come out swinging this week against claims of over-claiming in the aged care industry. Speaking to The Australian, he said that those accused of over-claiming were not “rorting”, but rather “maxing out” the system that had been given to them by the Australian Government.
Catholic HealthCare has purchased the former Maroubra Sports (Bowling) Club for $28.5 million with plans to build a new aged care hub for the area. The site, which was owned by the Maroubra RSL sub-branch and leased to the Sports Club for the last 50 years, will now be home to a new campus providing residential care, respite and home care services to the local area. It is located one block from Maroubra Beach.
Queensland based publicly listed Eureka has set out to purchase another six rental villages on top of the nine they have already purchased this year.
At our LEADERS SUMMIT last March industry veteran and Chairman of Ingenia, Jim Hazel, said “The future of retirement living belongs to the Not For Profits – they have the balance sheets, they have the brands, they have the care services and they have the executives to dominate in five years from now’. Proving his point in two weeks’ time (1 July) Sydney’s Anglican Retirement Villages and Anglicare will merge to create a ‘formidable’ competitor in the retirement village and aged care markets of Sydney and the Illawarra.
We know that fires in retirement village units would not appear to be significant news but we report them because operators need to be vigilant. This week another fire occurred at lunchtime in a Sydney village when the elderly woman was not at home. It started in the kitchen. This is the seventh retirement village unit fire we have reported in 24 months. Five were in winter. Fortunately nobody has been killed or severely burnt in any of these, just smoke inhalation and shock. Please advise your residents to be ‘fire aware’.
