National Seniors Australia has slammed the National Disability Insurance Scheme’s 65-year age limit, saying it will condemn older Australians to a ‘cruel lottery’.

Chief Executive Michael O’Neill (pictured) is appalled that the Federal government is determined to maintain the inequality of a system that will support someone who acquires a disability at age 64, but a year later “you’ll be shunted into the second-rate, user-pays aged care system," he told AAP.

A Senate NDIS inquiry was pre-empted by the federal government when it announced several amendments to the draft NDIS laws.

One would allow people to choose whether they want to continue receiving care under the NDIS when they turn 65.

Those who acquire a disability after they turn 65 will have no choice, and will be obliged to enter the aged-care system.
