Nine-in-ten Australians believe that we should pay for part of our own aged care, if we can afford to.

Proposals to overhaul the aged care sector by Federal Labor are on the right track according to a new survey.

The Menzies-Nouse health survey shows 92 per cent of older Australians would be prepared to meet some individual costs associated with their care.

In April, Labor revealed plans to separate charges for care and accommodation in their overhaul of the aged care sector.

The elderly would be charged up to $10,000pa for home care, and $25,000pa for residential care from mid-2014, with a lifetime cap of $60,000.

While the survey suggests we’re happy to meet some of those costs, the full impact on aged care is still uncertain.
