An outbreak of influenza A has claimed the lives of several residents of Mackay’s Northview aged care facility.

Authorities confirmed that the flu strain contributed to the deaths of two residents last week.

The outbreak had begun before this year’s flu vaccination had become available, however no new cases have been reported at Northview. It’s believed the outbreak has been contained.

The flu season appeared to have arrived earlier than usual said Alex Markwell, president of the Australian Medical Association Queensland. Over 700 cases had been reported in Queensland alone.

"It's very tragic that these patients have died, especially so early in the season because most people won't yet have been vaccinated," she said.

"But I think this serves as a timely reminder that influenza does kill people. It's a very significant thing."
