The Chinese government has introduced a law to protect the rights and interests of the elderly, including the requirement children visit their parents in aged care facilities.

It also requires that employers approve the necessary leave. The law prohibits “discrimination, insult, ill-treatment and abandonment”.

“Elderly day” has also been created and legislated. The laws are in response to the breakdown of Confucian values, combined with the single child policy and the migration of young people to cities. China has 185 million people older than 60.
