Blue Care's Lauriston Aged Care home announces its closure.

109 staff and 76 residents will be affected by the closure of the Eastern Heights facility.

Blue Care executive director Robyn Batten (pictured) said the state of the 54 year old building meant they were no longer able to meet the needs of residents.

However the facility would not close immediately.

"We will be working closely with residents and their families to find somewhere they are comfortable with," she said.

"Blue Care is a big organisation with 10,000 staff and volunteers and we will be redeploying as many staff as possible."

A member of Lauriston’s staff said workers were "absolutely devastated and residents' families absolutely shattered.

"The staff are very passionate. You don't do it for the money. You do it for the aged residents," she said, adding that the cuts by the Newman government cuts to Queensland Health meant the job market was extremely tight.

Queensland Nurses Union secretary Beth Mohle said they would be focussed on ensuring support for members during this difficult time.

"We've lost 760 nursing positions in Queensland Health across the state since September last year but this is an indication there is a lot of uncertainty in all sectors," she said.
