NSW state opposition Minister for Ageing Barbara Perry has called for a thorough investigation into reports that the safety of dozens of residents at Marco Polo nursing home in Unanderra has been compromised.

Ms Perry revealed to the Illawara Mercury that she had been informed of several alleged incidents at the home, but could not comment on the nature of the claims, stating only that they "concerned her greatly".

"Accountability for service providers who are working with vulnerable people is absolutely essential," she said.

Charmaine Crowe, Senior policy adviser of The Combined Pensioners and Superannuation Association, which had been advised of the allegations, found them extremely worrying.

"If these allegations are true, no nursing home resident is safe," she said.

Marco Polo continues to be monitored by The Department of Health and Ageing in regard to a non-compliance notice from January which claims the facility had failed to report serious assault allegations to authorities.
