In a media release, Aged and Community Services Australia (ACSA) CEO Prof John G Kelly extended ‘his deep concern about the very distressing stories’ that appeared in a recent ABC Lateline article about aged care.

The story was critical of aged care services in Australia and cited several instances of what amounted to abuse of elderly residents.

“It is always important to highlight problems in the system so we can deal with them and ensure the community is receiving quality care,” said Prof. Kelly.

“It is absolutely our intention to meet community expectations across the whole aged care sector,” he added.

Whilst the article presented a number of distressing situations, ACSA was clear that incidents like this are not experienced by the majority living in aged care facilities.

“There are currently about 200,000 residents in Australia’s nursing homes and the vast majority would be receiving very good care.”
